Sustainable Tourism Project (STP)

The Sustainable Tourism Project (STP) is being implemented in Bajhang district by Sahara Nepal, Bajhang in partnership with the Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The project aims to promote sustainable, inclusive, and community-based tourism while improving local livelihoods, employment opportunities, and overall living standards.

Bajhang district is rich in natural beauty, cultural diversity, and religious and historical heritage. However, limited tourism infrastructure, lack of skills, and weak service management have constrained the full utilization of its tourism potential. In response, the STP focuses on strengthening tourism infrastructure, enhancing the capacity of local service providers, improving service quality, and promoting environmentally responsible tourism practices.

A key component of the project is the promotion of the Saipal–Api trekking route, which includes route identification, exploration, mapping, and development of a promotion plan. This trekking route aims to connect remote communities, promote adventure, nature-based, and cultural tourism, and position Bajhang as an emerging trekking destination.

The project also supports the installation of tourism information boards and signage, waste management systems, and rest facilities along key routes. In addition, it emphasizes capacity building for homestays, small hotels, lodges, and tea houses, along with the development of operational guidelines, including local food menus and pricing, to ensure quality and consistency in tourism services.

Implemented in close coordination with local governments, the private sector, and community stakeholders, the Sustainable Tourism Project contributes to local economic development, job creation, social inclusion, environmental conservation, and the preservation of cultural and natural heritage. Overall, the project seeks to establish Bajhang as a sustainable and attractive tourism destination with long-term benefits for local communities.
